Moving Variables

You can move one variable form to the other side of the equal sign by using the inverse operation , which means that if u have an equation like, 7c+9=2c+9, you will have to add 2c to the 7c and then u add 9+9 and that will give u 9c=18.If you have a problem like 16j=12-4j you would add the 4j to the 16j because the inverse operation of subtraction is addition, also they are both like terms.The relation ship between subtraction an addition is that you can use one to check for the other one.The phrase, "what we do to one side we must do to the other" relates to a balance scale because if you apply that rule to an equation you will be able to balance out the variables and the number.

Hi Caroline,

I really enjoyed reading your blog entry about moving variables. I especially liked your colors and design.

You might want to check to see if your answer was exactly what you wanted to write...it seems like you are saying to add to both sides of the equation instead of doing the inverse operation, which is what I think you meant to say. You can always go back in and "edit" your post!

Keep blogging!

Hey Carol,
Okay well what i mean about x/2*2 and 6*2=12.Is that when we apply the inverse operation to both equations is that x=12.Because x/2*2=12/2*2 and that is equal to 6*2=12.So then in the other equation we do the same thing 6*2=12
/2=/2
6=6.This is what i mean about x/2*2 and 6*2 =]....
